When I heard Pop Departures was coming to SAM I immediately bought tickets and made reservations for a fancy dinner nearby. Nothing like a Saturday date with my boo to keep me looking forward to the weekend.
We saw Warhols and Lichtensteins and arrived just in time for a tour which was quite interesting. I learned something I'll never forget; are you familiar with Warhol's flower piece? It's quite popular and super fab if you ask me. Well, the tour guide let us in on a little piece of info in that piece. The middle of the flowers, well...they're overexposed certain parts of men genitalia. Starts with an A and ends with an S. Four letters. Hangman anyone? I don't think I'll ever forget that little piece of info. I'll take Warhol for $500 Alex!
When we were leaving we cruised by the other exhibits. A red statue demanded my attention and I ran over to it. It was Gandhi walking. But then I noticed the phone in his hand and ears. And I got sad. I picture him walking through a beautiful sunlit forest with pine needles ever so slightly raining on him; maybe on his way to break bread with his loved ones. And instead of soaking up all the beauty, he's looking down at some damn piece of technology. And smiling?
This spoke to me in so many ways. We are in front of screens everywhere we go, day and night. We miss out on the beauty this world offers us each day because we're too busy staring at a screen. As a social media manager this may sound silly but in my heart I feel like we all need to unplug more. Yes it's necessary to our businesses and life but you know those times when you don't need to have your phone in your hand or be on your laptop; those are the times I'm talking about.
You know what's messed up is that I reached for my phone to take the pic of this art piece....but I had to because how else would I have shared it with you lovely people? I obviously don't have it all figured out.
