Kerrie's Blog: Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Well it has been way too long and I need to finish my series of my TOAL (Trip Of A Lifetime).  Our last port before heading back to Barcelona was Croatia.  We had a day of rest between Venice and Croatia so I was ready to roll when we ported in.

We took a bus to old town which is behind the walls.  It was a very, very hot day and we decided to jump on a glass bottom boat ride to escape the hot sun.  The clear teal water, breeze and gorgeous view of Dubrovnik from the sea was perfect.   "Beaches" on big rocks landscaped the town with visitors and locals jumping in again and again.

Wandering through the streets was just surreal.  Churches nestled in little nooks, cats (again with the random cats) and shops everywhere.  Narrow cobblestone streets with windows showed life.  A million miles away from home I wondered how a typical Croatian spent their days.  I bought a moonstone necklace from some chick on the street and this was the only port that did not use the Euro.  Croatia's currency is the Kronor but they gladly accepted my Euros.

It's been a little over 2 months since my European TOAL.  I'm grateful for having had the chance to go and finally crossing the pond.  The memories I have with my family will last a lifetime and I kept a journal with tidbits and stories from each port to treasure.

I am jealous. Or is it envious? That certainly is the TOAL. Congratulations. Beautiful photos. Thank the lord for digital cameras.

Kerrie,

So much of Europe is so... ancient. We are looking forward to an Italy trip in the near future.

Best,

Steve

It sounds like a slice of heaven.  Your pictures are beautiful, and I don't know about you, but I'd have my scrapbook well on its way :) . . . how wonderful that you had this opportunity!

And what is the top right picture?

PS Do you know the guy in the background with his hands up? :)

Mimi - Lol...that's my dad...he's amazing!  :)

The top right pic is a piece of the wall that surrounds old Croatia...

Kerrie - I can't say it enough - you went on the perfect vacation and saw all the places I'd love to visit. When we are ready for our next big trip, I'm going to call you and find out who you booked your trip with - you saw the most interesting things in so many countries. Thanks for sharing your photos with us - it inspires me to work harder so I can do this soon! Now I have to show Marty and dangle a little carrot in front of him!

First off, it makes me so happy when people have that kind of relationship with their Dad.  As the mother of five girls, I have come to believe that a healthy father/daughter relationship is one of the greatest treasures in life . . . sounds like you have that.

And what these pictures just speak to me of is . . . romance?  Of the structures, of the lives here, of the joy of being there now . . . breathtaking . . .

Ahhh, the TOAL that never ends! And nor should it. So glad you got to have this experience Kerrie. I know from the energy in your writing that your TOAL is something you'll never forget.

We don't really understand how new the United States is, in comparison to other parts of the globe.  Those old structures have been there seemingly forever.  There's nothing like it here.

Kerrie, wonderful photos and what an exciting trip you made. I'll have to look for your other posts on the trip. Always fun to visually share our experiences. Awesome! Interesting structures and love the photo of the sea cave!

Kerrie, you are right as those memories will come back large whenever someone mentions a name of a country you visited, or one of the cities. Those memories will come back with a freshness making you think it was just last week. So nice to hear you enjoyed it.

Hi Kerrie, just read the reblog from Richard Yates and wanted to see your photos of Croatia.  I LOVED Dubrovnik, it was so gorgeous, especially the walk on the wall.  We also went to the Island of Bol, Hvar, Split, The Plitvice National Forest and Zagreb, as well as lots of charming towns in between-spent 11 days in Croatia and loved every one.  Glad you took great photos!
