Kerrie's Blog: Hosting an ActiveRain Contest

Hosting an ActiveRain Contest

ActiveRain Contests have been going on for years.  They promote camaraderie throughout our community, good blogging and work habits, fun as well as a great ways to share ideas.

Any time of month you can find 2, 3 or 4 contests running on ActiveRain. Thanks to the lovely hosts, these contests are possible.  Did you know anyone can host a contest?  So long as it's a good idea with some meat to its bones and for the good of our community it's pretty much a go.

So what does it take to host a contest?

First - A good idea.  It starts with an email to me (kerrie@activerain.com) with an "I have an idea for a contest".

Second - If it has legs, I'll ask for a draft post where you outline the logistics of the contest.  The who, what, where and why. You'll want to explain to the community what the contest is about, the guidelines and how to submit their entry.  Usually you'll ask participants to leave a link to their entry in the comments.

Third - You need to decide if this is a contest where there is a '1st, 2nd & 3rd place winner' or if it's a '500 points for everyone that enters' kind of contest.  Note that if you want to have winners, it takes much more time and work on your end as a host.  Usually the contest host enlists the help of 2 or 3 other Rainers who are willing to judge; you must read every entry in order to find the winners.  You and I will decide what points are appropriate so you can let participants know what's in store should they join.

Fourth - You and I pick a month to launch.  I'll ask you to make your post public on the 1st of that month and make me aware when you do so I can feature it and include it in our other marketing pieces.

Once the contest launches..

As a host. you'll need to stay present throughout the month responding to questions that participants will have.

After the contest wraps, points will be awarded as soon as I can possibly do so.  Sometimes judging may take a few weeks; it can't be easy to judge all your fantastic entries!

Interested?

Email me whenever an idea sparks.  And a big THANK YOU to all the contest judges, past and present who so willingly give their time and love to this amazing community.

Wow... that sounds like way too much work for me.  But, I do have to salute those who run them....and you, of course!

This is good info Kerrie, thanks for sharing.  I had wondered how the contests originated.  If I ever have a good idea (not likely!) I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for the explanation Kerrie. I know that these things do take a bit of time to do, and one day I will be e-mailing you.

I think it is important that we step out of our box and get involved with such a great community here!

Thanks for the information Kerrie! This has been very helpful. Kudos to all who take the initiative. We definitely have a lot of creative members here on AR who like to assume leadership roles and teambuilding. And then again, we have awesome participants who surprises everyone and there are times when we have to say, "Who knew?"

Hi Kerrie! I love AvtiveRain contests! I wrote a post about last month too. Are you having a Cloudburst challenge in June?

Contests "in the Rain" are fun, and hosting is fantastic, also a lot of work, time and energy.  Be prepared people.....but it's so fulfilling.  My favorite part of hosting a contest is getting to communicate so much with Kerrie!

I think my "Be The Star of Your Own Movie" Contest has run it's course, there was so little participation this year.  I'm trying to come up with another idea.....with a twist of course.
