Kerrie's Blog: Bubbling Up in the Washington Post

Bubbling Up in the Washington Post

Congrats to the ActiveRain Community as you were picked up by the Washington Post today!

I love seeing major publications quote your valuable insights.  Tammy Lankford, wrote a post,  Does Your Agent Look at Your Housing Needs or Their Commission First? which currently has over 100 comments.

Mike & Eve Alexander and Bill Reddington were quoted and our awesome community was mentioned!

This is yet another reminder how powerful your words are and what great exposure you can get simply by sharing them.

Let it Rain!

Kerrie- Thank you for sharing this because it's so encouraging when we see that any of our members are being read outside this community.  Congratulations to Tammy Lankford !

That's actually a great article.  Unfortunately, it's articles like this that make for easy agent-bashing.  Those who think agents make too much to begin with and all a buyer has to do is find the property online, come out of the woodwork. Read the comments to that article.  It's happening.

Tammy Lankford wasn't mentioned in that article at all.

Posted by Carla Muss-Jacobs, RETIRED (RETIRED / State License is Inactive) over 5 years ago

Carla Muss-Jacobs, Principal Broker/Owner I couldn't believe the author didn't link to the post or mention at least the author, Tammy Lankford.   I had to dig to find out what post he was talking about.

Kerrie La Guardia I had a long discussion with him, I don't really think he liked my point of view because he was out to prove more people are ones who don't show the house because they don't discuss possible payment from their buyers they represent or aren't willing to put their clients interest ahead of a better commission for themselves.  But interesting that he did mention ActiveRain as the source for the people he did want quotes from.

I just read the WaPo piece and while the overall mention of ActiveRain is nice, I didn't care for the overall tone of the article.   Without attributuon, the writer used Tammy Lankford's excellent post as a springboard to support their already slanted, negative view of the real estate industry.

Although he didn't mention Tammy, he did make sure to mention members whose comments he seemed to be able to twist to support his opinions. Tammy's post was positive and showed her professionalism and shone a positive light on how true professionals in our industry do business.

Thanks Karen Winters , I talked with him last week and I knew he didn't like my way of thinking and that it didn't fit his narrative.  I'm sure some agents do just what he suggests. In fact one saying they did prompted my post in the first place saying... hey, not me, not ever.  And in my original post most most people stated they do the same.  But "journalist" do what they do... try to sell the story with controversy.

Posted by Gary L. Waters Broker Associate, Bucci Realty, Fifteen Years Experience in Brevard County (Bucci Realty, Inc.) over 5 years ago

Very cool.... it was clear, in the article, that the author was hoping to find a nest of evil, and instead found some highly ethical agents.

Posted by Alan May, There's no place like home. (Jameson Sotheby's International Realty) over 5 years ago

Just read the article. This not exactly what I said. Paraphrased my comment. If a buyer wants to see a certain property I show it regardless of the commission. I give buyers an oppotunity to pick the properties they want to see. I have no issue calling listing agents and asking for a 50/50 split before writting an offer and most times when setting up an appointment. Have to be able to survive in this business.

I guess I should have mentioned to the reporter how many times I have chipped in part of the commission to make the deal fly in 26 years of selling real estate.

It's a shame that Tammy's viewpoint, along with many other commenters, wasn't the real news here, but it could have been much worse.

I say all the time that ActiveRain works!  What we write gets out there, and gets out there far and wide.  Though it sounds like the writer was biased, it's still nice to see the exposure at work.

Wow!  That is some powerful exposure, Kerrie.  WTG!

FWIW, the WP did a great job of warning Sellers and their Listing Agents about low-balling "the split" (with total respect to the DOJ Anti-Trust Laws, etc.).

   Great job, ActiveRainers!

Posted by Fred Griffin Tallahassee Real Estate, Licensed Florida Real Estate Broker (Fred Griffin Real Estate) over 5 years ago

Active Rain is getting more popular and is drawing attention.  Suprised with that Exposure.  WE do our job and I do not look to see what the commission is when I am selling.  Meeting the needs of the client...then and only then do I think about the money.  If I have done the job needing to be done, then yes...compensation  is in order..

Having information like this is very helpful when trying to make the case for participation and membership on AR, Kerrie La Guardia ... it hard proof regarding the VALUE to be found here.  The Midwest region needs to hear and see your message ... and starting blogging more!

That said, the article seems to have had a bit of a pre-agenda ... proving that somehow agents wanting to make money for their work is wrong.  I've usually found that people that write these industry articles have little real knowledge or understanding of what they write or how the industry itself works.  If they were going to use Tammy Lankford's post as a springboard to showcase their opinions ... would it have been out-of-line for them to include the link to her post?  That way their readers could have read the article in its entirety, been informed, read all the comments made, and formed their own opinions on the issue ...

Many realtor move on when their commission split was better.  I personally do not like the idea that brokers tell you we offer the best split and gave the most training or leads in effect they were not...

Well, congrats to them for being mentioned, but I didn't care for the article and even less for most of the comments that followed. Not sure I'd want to be mentioned in an article like that.
